Tutankhamum 2012
A New Book Reveals Lord Carnarvon's Secrets
The 90th anniversary of the "discovery" of Tutankhamun's Tomb by George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert, 5th Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter falls in November, 2012. The central core of a new book is to explore the largely untold life story of Carter’s patron, George Herbert, 5th Lord Carnarvon. The book will highlight Carnarvon’s development years, his many fads, and personal relationships, as well as to reveal the result of fresh research into the people, influences and events that shaped his personality and of what motivated the man for whom history records brought Tutankhamun’s Tomb to light.
Tutankhamum 2012 is also an opportunity for a retrospective on all those caught up in the historic discovery of 1922 and several people ( some who are still unsung) to be appraised or reappraised in the Carnarvon-Carter- Tutankahmun timeline. In fact, did Carnarvon actually bring the priceless Tomb to light after 3000 years? Why did Carnarvon’s widow, Almina, feel that the story of the Egyptian years had never been fully told? And what were the circumstances leading to Lord Carnarvon’s death, in 1923?
In September 2012, William Cross, FSA Scot, author of “The Life and Secrets of Almina Carnarvon” the candid biography of Carnarvon’s widow, will publish a new book called “ Lordy ! All About Tutankhamun's Patron”. The new book will include the content of unique letters written by Almina about the Carnarvons decades in Egypt, as well as dealing with the aftermath of her husband’s demise.
William Cross would welcome any written or photographic material, letters, diaries, anecdotes, reflecting on the various players in the Tutankhamun tale, and on any other participants and contemporaries of Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter.
The last major anniversary to mark the discovery of the tomb was 40 years ago, in 1972. Cross would also be pleased to have any material, recollections, memories or stories from anyone who visited the great Tutankhamun exhibition at the British Museum in 1972, to mark the 50th anniversary of the historic find, and which included many of the treasures of the boy King from Cairo Museum.
